I Need My Monster: Storybook Walk Edition

from $174.00

Available from September 17, 2026. Pre-Order possible.

One night, when Ethan checks under his bed for his monster, Gabe, he finds a note from him instead: “Gone fishing. Back in a week." Ethan knows that without Gabe’s familiar nightly scares he doesn't stand a chance of getting to sleep, so Ethan interviews potential substitutes to see if they've got the right equipment for the job—pointy teeth, sharp claws, and a long tail—but none of them proves scary enough for Ethan. When Gabe returns sooner than expected from his fishing trip, Ethan is thrilled. It turns out that Gabe didn't enjoy fishing because the fish scared too easily.

A unique monster-under-the-bed story with the perfect balance of giggles and shivers, this picture book relies on the power of humor over fear, appeals to a child’s love for creatures both alarming and absurd, and glorifies the scope of a child’s imagination.

This Storybook Walk Edition includes read-along audio, so children can hear the story brought to life at every stop. Each spread also features a playful activity prompt to get kids moving, laughing, and connecting with the story's energetic, monster-loving spirit.

Contains 18 spreads (fits in 18 frames). This includes an instruction page.

Sizes: 11 × 17 and 18 × 24 inch.

Please Note: Due to the detailed artwork and smaller text in this title, we recommend choosing the 18″×24″ Edition for outdoor trail displays or any location where readers stand at a distance from the signs.

Material: Laminated or printed on Coroplast (Metal H-frame stakes sold separately).

Funny Activity Prompts

I Need My Monster’s activity prompts ask children to think about what kind of an under-the-bed monster they would like best while acting out a lot of the over-the-top characteristics.

About the Author

Amanda Noll is the author of the I Need My Monster series. Born and raised in Canberra, Australia, Amanda moved to the United States as a teen. After marrying her college sweetheart, she began working in the purchasing division of a private university (which was ironic, since she despises shopping). After a while, Amanda left the business world to attend to the business of raising children, and to concentrate on her writing. Her work has appeared in Hopscotch and Family Fun magazines. She blames her fundamentally twisted sense of humor on either genetics or being raised on a steady stream of Australian humor and science fiction. Amanda lives in Spanaway, Washington with her husband and children. The monster under her bed is named Gertie.

About the Illustrator

Howard McWilliam is the author and illustrator of Just SNOW Already! and the award-winning illustrator of the I Need My Monster series, When a Dragon Moves In series, John Cena’s Elbow Grease series (a NY Times #1 Bestseller), and many other children’s books, with over 1 million copies sold. He is the cover artist of The Week (US & UK), and he lives with his wife and three sons in Cheltenham, England.

Awards

Wall Street Journal Best Seller List, for two weeks in October 2016; Scholastic Book Club Selection; California Young Readers Medal, 2011-12; Indie Next Kids’ Pick, Summer 2009; The I Need My Monster series is ranked #7 in the top books read by 3rd graders in Accelerated Reader, as reported in Renaissance’s 2025 What Kids Are Reading Report; And, many, many more awards…

Reviews

"Dramatic in perspective, McWilliam's exaggerated, digitally colored art renders the monsters in a spectrum of neon hues and outlandish shapes. The collaborators ably balance some bedtime chills with humor, and Ethan's enthusiasm for his monster should prove infectious."  —Publishers Weekly

“…an unusually well done double-debut.” –Kirkus Reviews

“…turns the tables on monster fears….” –Booklist
