From Scratch

Maybe you have a book that you have always wanted to use for a Storybook Walk. Maybe you have a great idea for a type of display. Doing a Storybook Walk on your own can be intimidating. Here are a few tips on how to get started.

Materials

2-3 Copies of a book - You will need at least 2 copies of a book in order to make a walk because each page is printed on both sides. Buying a third book makes it easier to sort pages.

Card Stock in 11 x 17- If you do not have card stock, you will need some form of heavy paper for the background. Most children’s book have around 12-14 spreads. This means you will need at least 13-15 pages.

(Colored typing Paper) - If you are unable to print on card stock, then you will need typing paper to print out prompts.

A scissors, glue, and pencils - The glue is only necessary to hold the story to the page so that it does not slip in the lamination process.

Display materials - This varies depending on the type of display that you choose. See Chapter 4 - Display Your Walk.

The Process

1. First, you cut the pages out of the books and place spreads together. Be careful to cut pages out as close as possible to the seam as otherwise a two page illustration may not line up correctly. As pages are printed on both sides, you will need two books in order to have all spreads.

2. Line up all the pages. This can be very confusing because most children’s books do not have page numbers. This is why it is often helpful to have a third book available.

3. Print prompts and any other banner info onto the card stock making sure to leave enough room for both pages of your story. If you are unable to print onto card stock, then print prompts and other info onto colorful typing paper and then glue it on the bottom of the card stock. Adding page numbers to the background is helpful.

4. Glue spreads onto the appropriate background.

5. Laminate each page. If possible, leave 1/4 to 1/2 inch of lamination around each background. This will help pages stay protected longer, especially if you want to place your Storybook Walk outside.

6. Finally, finished pages can be placed in a display case or hung up.
